Using images & ESL flashcards

Images are a very effective tool in teaching a language. There are countless ways to take advantage of images in the class and make your ESL lessons more effective.

  • Images help translate the meaning of words
  • Images help teachers elicit target and grammar structures
  • Images add color to a lesson, and help keep students interested
  • Images give context to the structures being taught
  • Images motivate students to speak and write

How do I print an ESL flashcard?

Our images can be printed straight from your browser to come out as perfectly centered full-size ESL flashcards.

  1. Start by selecting one of the printing options at the top of the topic page. Our ESL flashcards can be printed in black and white or colour. You can also choose to have the text displayed at the bottom of the card by clicking “with text”.
  2. Click the thumbnail image you would like to print. (The image will be displayed full size in a pop up window.)
  3. Before printing be sure to adjust your page setup to landscape. To do this click on File at the top of the page and choose Page Setup. Then select the landscape mode. This will center the image on the page to make a perfect flashcard.
  4. Click Print.

If you are viewing our images by topic, and would like to print the entire set in medium and mini size, follow the steps below. Please note that you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view and print these images. If you don’t have Acrobat Reader, you can download it free by clicking here.

  1. On the left side bar click ”Download This Set of Images as a PDF”.
  2. A PDF document will be downloaded to your hard disk. Open the document and select the pages you would like to print in your print manager.
  3. Click Print.

How do I download an ESL image?

To download an image and save it to your hard drive, follow the directions below. Please view ESL-Images.com’s Terms of Use and User Guidelines regarding downloading our images before downloading.

  1. Choose colour or black and white at the top of the topic page. (Please note: you will not be able to download the image with the text displayed.)
  2. Click on the thumbnail image you need. This will enlarge the image to its full size.
  3. Place the cursor over the full size image and right mouse click. (If you are on a Mac which does not have a right mouse button, hold down the control button as you click.
  4. Choose “save picture as”  (Mac Users choose "save image to disk").

How do I paste an image into a document?

There are two ways to paste an image into a document.

Option A: For best image results:

  1. Download the image you need to your hard disk by following the directions above.
  2. Open the program you need (such as Word, Power Point, etc.)
  3. Click insert image.
  4. Select the image you need.

Option B: To save time

  1. Click on the thumbnail image you need to enlarge it to its full size.
  2. Put the cursor over the full size image and right mouse click. (If you are using a Mac that does not have a right mouse button, hold the control key down as you click on the image.)
  3. Choose “copy image”
  4. Open the program you would like to paste the image into.
  5. Right mouse click again (control + click for Mac users) and select paste. Your image will appear in your document.

Please note that Option B will produce a slightly lower quality image.

 

Stretching and shrinking the image:

Once you have pasted the image into your document, you can stretch or shrink the image by doing the following.

  1. Click once on the image. A box should appear around the image to show that it is highlighted.
  2. Grab one of the corners of the image by clicking once and holding down the mouse key.
  3. Stretch or shrink the image to the size you need.
